A quick check of weight against height, using the cut-offs recommended for Indian adults.
Your BMI
What it tells you
BMI is weight divided by height squared. It is a quick screen for whether weight is likely to be affecting health, used the same way worldwide.
Why the Indian cut-offs are lower
At the same BMI, South Asians tend to carry more body fat and more of it around the waist, so risk rises earlier. Overweight starts at 23, not 25.
What it misses
Muscle, pregnancy, age and where fat sits. A waist above 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women matters even at a healthy BMI. It is a screen, not a diagnosis.
Cut-offs: WHO Expert Consultation on BMI for Asian populations (The Lancet, 2004) and the Consensus Statement for Asian Indians (Misra et al., 2009). For adults aged 18 and over. Speak to a doctor about what your number means for you.
